SOCIAL EVENT

A banquet on a 19th century battleship

The Social Event for ETS'06 will be held at HMS Warrior, in the neighbouring city of Portsmouth. There will be a banquet of (nearly) authentic 19th century naval food and entertainment with a nautical theme.

The pride of Queen Victoria, Warrior revolutionised warship construction. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest and fastest ship of her day. The ship has been carefully restored and turned into a national treasure, a preserved memory of the maritime history of the United Kingdom.

Some random facts about the ship:

  • Into service a.d. 1860
  • 418 feet long (128 metres)
  • Maximum speed 14.5 knots
  • Had guns that would haul 110 pounders (50kgs)
  • The total crew was 705 men

A visit to Fort Nelson

On the way to Portsmouth, we will stop at Fort Nelson, built in the 19th century as part of Britain's defences.

Fort Nelson houses a collection of artillery of the Royal Armouries. Many old and new weapons are on show, from different parts of the world.

There will be an opportunity to sample some of the finest English beer, available from the Cheriton Brewhouse.
